Background: On Sunday (24 March) during the fourth day of his official visit to Ghana, the Director General of the United Nations Educational and Scientific Organisation, Rene Maheu, visited Akosombo to see the hydro-electric installations of the Volta River dam.

The Volta dam was completed in 1965. It is approximately 1,400 feet wide and is 440 feet high off the bedrock. Behind it is the largest man-made lake in the world. The water driving the turbines produces enough electricity to satisfy all Ghana's needs and leave enough over to export power to neighbouring Togo and Dahomey.

The purpose of Rene Maheu's visit was to discus UNESCO aid to Ghana. Before he left the country, today (Monday, 25 March), he announced that a centre for the manufacture of scientific equipment was to be set up in Ghana with UNESCO aid.
