  • Description

AN ERUPTING VOLCANO CAUSED JAPAN'S MIYAKE ISLAND TO ROCK AND TREMBLE YESTERDAY (SATURDAY). CRATERS ON MOUNT OYAMA, NEAR TOKYO BAY, THREW OUT SMOKE, FLAMES, ROCK AND MOLTEN LAVA ALL DAY LONG. SEVEN ISLANDERS WERE INJURED AND FOUR HOUSES WERE SET ON FIRE.

STREAMS OF THE RED-HOT LAVA POURED INTO THE SEA ON THE EASTERN SIDE OF THE ISLAND, CREATING GIANT CLOUDS OF STEAM. LATER, THE ERUPTIONS APPEARED TO BE GRADUALLY SUBSIDING AND IT WAS HOPED THAT IT WOULD BE UNNECESSARY TO EVACUATE PEOPLE FROM THE ISLAND.

SOME 2,700 PEOPLE FROM NEARBY VILLAGES WERE TAKEN TO SCHOOLS AND OTHER BUILDINGS AT IZU VILLAGE, NORTHWEST OF THE ISLAND. JAPANESE MARITIME AND AIR SELF-DEFENCE WERE SENT TO THE ISLAND WITH RELIEF SUPPLIES.

(IT WAS THE FIRST TIME FOR 22 YEARS THAT THE VOLCANO HAD ERUPTED. THE NEAR-CIRCULAR MIYAKE ISLAND, WITH A POPULATION OF 6,565, IS IN THE FUJI VOLCANIC ZONE. RECORDS SHOW THE VOLCANO HAS BEEN ERUPTING EVERY 40 OR 50 YEARS SINCE THE ELEVENTH CENTURY. THE LATEST ERUPTION IS REPORTED TO BE BIGGER IN SCALE THAN THE LAST ONE IN JULY, 1940.)
