TURKISH WARSHIPS LEFT ISKANDERUN, ON THE SOUTHERN COAST OF TURKEY, TODAY, AND SAILED ALONG THE NORTH COAST OF CYPRUS BOUND FOR ISTANBUL. MEANWHILE, NAVAL UNITS IN GREEK PORTS WERE STANDING BY.

    N.A.T.O. AMBASSADORS WERE HURRIEDLY SUMMONED TO THE URGENT SESSION IN AN ALMOST EMPTY NATO BUILDING, WITH THE STAFF STILL ON NEW YEAR HOLIDAY. THE MEETING LASTED FOR ABOUT AN HOUR. AFTERWARDS IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT THE COUNCIL WAS WATCHING THE CYPRUS SITUATION CLOSELY AND MIGHT MEET AGAIN AT SHORT NOTICE IF NECESSARY.
