Background: Libyan leader, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, hailed by pro-government newspapers as "Malta's greatest friend" arrived for a three-day visit to Malta on Friday (21 May). He was greeted by cheering crowds and a guard of honour and met at Valletta's airport by Maltese President, Sir Anthony Mamo.

After Colonel Gaddafi's last visit two years ago, it was announced that Libya was to invest in industry and tourism in Malta to help promote the economy of the island.

Valletta had been decorated with large posters of Maltese Prime Minister, Dom Mintoff, and Colonel Gaddafi. The two men are to have talks during the Libyan leader's visit.

Observers in Malta believe the ruling Maltese Labour Party will use the Colonel's visit to boost their campaign for Malta's general election later this year.

During his visit, Colonel Gaddafi is also to address a mass rally. It's his second official visit to Malta. The first was in 1974.
