  • Description

In Spain, a large demonstration was held in Madrid on Tuesday (10 October) to protest against the state of housing for the poor. The marchers demanded what they called dignified conditions for the working classes.

SYNOPSIS: Many of those who took part in the demonstration came from Vallecas and nearby poor areas in southern Madrid. The problem of housing has been increasing over the past 20 years. Madrid has grown rapidly in that time, with may of the poor from the countryside abandoning villages and settling in the big city. Housing for the working class became increasingly inadequate. On Tuesday night (10 October), they took to the streets to voice their needs.

Police estimated that 75,000 took part in the demonstration. The organisers were the Neighbourhood Associations of Madrid and the Community Party, as well as Communist Trade Unions.

The demonstrators demanded what they called "dignified housing". As they marched through the streets of Madrid, they chanted, among other things - "Mayor, you are a thief, where are the houses?".
