Background: In Greece on Thursday (30 March) thousands of students and many high school teaching assistants took part in a demonstration at Athens University.

SYNOPSIS: Students at the university and other high schools in the country have been staying away from classes for almost three weeks now. this demonstration, in the courtyard of the university, was part of the campaign that is being conducted by students who are demanding a series of educational reforms.

They are also protesting against a package of anti-terrorist laws introduced because of concern at increasing political violence and kidnappings in Europe.

The new legislation includes the death sentence for acts of terrorism in which a person is killed and also sentences of life imprisonment for kidnapping and hijacking. When it was introduced last month the government said there was no terrorism in Greece and they intended to keep it that way.

There was little trouble at this demonstration, but two weeks earlier, in the town of Patras, 55 people were injured in clashes between students and police.
