Background: THE WORLD'S BIGGEST COMMERCIAL AIRLINER, THE BOEING 747, LANDED IN LONDON TODAY ON ITS FIRST SCHEDULED AIRLINE FLIGHT--SIX HOURS LATE.

THE GIANT 195-FEET-LONG (90 METERS) JUMBO JET ENDED ITS INAUGURAL PAN AMERICAN FLIGHT FROM NEW YORK AFTER ENGINE TROUBLE HAD MEANT POSTPONEMENT JUST AS THE AIRCRAFT WAS TAXIING OUT TO TAKE OFF. A STAND-BY AIRCRAFT WAS USED FOR THE FLIGHT. BOEING TECHNICIANS HAD WORKED DAY AND NIGHT IN THE WEEK TO GET EMERGENCY EXITS UP TO CERTIFICATIONS STANDARD.

THE PLANE TOUCHED DOWN IN LONDON WITH 362 PASSENGERS ON BOARD--IT IS CAPABLE OF CARRYING NEARLY 500 PEOPLE IN SOME VERSIONS. THE PLANE HAD CRUISED AT OVER 600 MILES PER HOUR DURING ITS FLIGHT.

AS SOON AS THE PLANE ARRIVED AT LONDON'S HEATHROW AIRPORT DOZENS OF GROUND STAFF SWARMED ROUND THE AIRCRAFT AND PASSENGERS WERE OFF AND THROUGH CUSTOMS IN QUICK TIME.

THE PLANE WAS THE FIRST OF WHAT IS EXPECTED TO BE HUNDREDS OF JUMBO JETS IN SERVICE IN THE 1970s.
