Background: A GREAT CENTURY BY BROAD-SHOULDERED PETER BURGE ENABLED AUSTRALIA TO LEAD ENGLAND ON FIRST INNINGS ON THE SECOND DAY OF THE THIRD CRICKET TEST AT HEADINGLEY TODAY (FRIDAY).

BY THE CLOSE AUSTRALIA WERE 283 FOR EIGHT IN REPLY TO ENGLAND'S TOTAL OF 268. BURGE HAS EXACTLY 100 NOT OUT.

IN A DAY OF FLUCTUATING CRICKET AUSTRALIA LOST SIX WICKETS FOR 54 RUNS AFTER THEY HAD BEEN 124 FOR ONE EARLY IN THE AFTERNOON.

BUT THEN BURGE COMPLETELY COLLARED THE ENGLAND NEW BALL ATTACK OF FRED TRUEMAN AND JOHN FLAVELL. BURGE RECEIVED INVALUABLE SUPPORT FROM NEIL HAWKE AND THESE TWO PUT ON 105 IN AN EIGHT WICKET STAND.

HAWKE WAS OUT OFF THE LAST BALL OF THE DAY FOR 37.

EARLIER IN THE DAY OPENER BILL LAWRY HIT 78 BEFORE BEING UNLUCKILY RUN OUT. IT WAS ENGLAND'S SPINNERS WHO GAINED THE BREAK-THROUGH DURING THE AFTERNOON. FRED TITMUS TOOK THREE WICKETS TODAY AND NORMAN GIFFORD TWO.
