Background: July 13th: The World Cup - and Italy, one of the hot favourites to win the Cup, made unexpectedly hard work of their 2-0 victory over Chile at Sunderland.

The Chileans, playing right to left, produced the occasional menacing raid into the Italian half, but the European's defence was able to deal with this, and for the first minutes, the Italians had the upper hand. With ten minutes gone, Sandro Mazzola put them ahead.....

The Nineteen-Sixty-Two World cup match between these teams was marked by violence, but this time, despite occasional loose play, there was little trouble. Chile lost their chances to get ahead. And the Italians made some misses too. In the thirty-first minute they should have scored again, but Figueroa cleared Barison's shot off the line, with Olivares well out of position.

Right on half time, Chile came close to equalising with a twenty-five yard free kick. At the interval, Italy were leading one Nil. Chile were still in the game. The Italians failed to score from another free kick and their defence had been hard put to keep the South Americans out.

The Chileans were still fighting hard at the eighty-fourth minute when they made another forcing attack on the Italian goal. But two minutes before the end, the Italians finally broke the Chileans, who had been playing with only ten men for most of the second half. Barison produced an unstoppable waist high drive for Italy to go two up.
