  • Description

Most English football writers -- and the millions of home fans who followed the game on their television sets -- rated England unlucky to lose c-1 to the Russians in last night's World Cup game at Gothenburg. Many say that Russia only made one shot at goal in the second half -- and this was the 69th minute goal from Anatoli Ilyin that put the jubilant Soviet eleven into the last eight of the contest. Had England made its way into the quarter-finals, they would have joined the two other United Kingdom countries, Wales and Northern Ireland, both of whom won their matches last night by 2-1.

Twice in the early stages of the second half, England winger Brabrook hit the Russian post and the team was in command of the game throughout. Only in the first 30 minutes did the Russians look like challenging the English supremacy but then they cracked and looked a tired team. Biggest applause in t he English eleven went to the new wing of Broadbent and Brabrook - Broadbent the superb schooner of attacks and Brabrook an agile and penetrating forward who was not afraid to loose his powerful shot. Yashin, the Russian goalkeeper, had a fine game, constantly tested in the second half -- but lucky to see those two shots from Brabrook rebound off the foot of the post.
