  • Description

A BRIDGE BUILT WITH AID FROM THE CHINESE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC HAS BEEN OPENED ON THE NEW HIGHWAY FROM THE NEPALESE CAPITAL, KATMANDU, TO LHASA IN TIBET.

THE HIGHWAY, WHICH FOLLOWS AN ANCIENT TRADE ROUTE, IS BEING BUILT JOINTLY BY CHINA AND NEPAL, ALTHOUGH MOST OF THE EQUIPMENT AND THE TECHNICIANS ARE CHINESE.

THE 180 METRE BRIDGE AT DOLAL-GHAT IS 35 MILES (56 KILOMETRES) NORTH OF KATMANDU. THE TIBETAN SECTION OF THE ROAD IS ALREADY FINISHED, AND THE REMAINING STRETCH FROM DOLAL-GHAT TO NEPAL'S NORTHERN FRONTIER IS EXPECTED TO BE READY BY THE END OF 1967.

THE OPENING OF THE BRIDGE WAS ATTENDED BY THE NEPALESE MINISTERS OF TRANSPORT AND OF POWER, AND THE CHINESE AMBASSADOR TO KATMANDU WAS ALSO THERE.
