  • Description

More than 270 bodies were recovered from the rubble of a score of towns and villages in northeast Italy on friday (7 May) following a devastating earthquake the night before (6 May).

Reuters news agency said the final death toll from the quake, with tremors felt in six other European countries, could pass 500.

In Rome Signor Guiseppe Zamberletti, Under-Secretary at the Interior Ministry, said first estimates put the homeless at 110,000.

The quake, measuring about 6.5 on the open-ended Richter scale was felt from Strasbourg, France to Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. In Italy it was felt as far south as Rome.

The main tremor was described by Viennese seismologist, Dr. Julius Drimmel, as close to the maximum intensity considered possible for an earth disturbance in Europe.

Soon after the quake hundreds of rescue workers were digging frantically to find survivors. A senior police officer at Majano said he had no idea how many people were still trapped under rubble and it could be a week before they found out.

The Italian head of state, President Giovanni Leone, and two senior ministers in the caretaker government flew from Rome on Friday afternoon for a personal inspection of the site.

The earthquake was the worst in Italy since 1930 when 1425 people were killed in the Irpinia area east of Naples.

The worst ever such disaster was the Messina earthquake in Sicily in 1908 when estimated 123,000 people lost their lives.
