  • Description

THERE NOW SEEMS NO HOPE OF FINDING THE MISSING FRENCH SUBMARINE, "MINERVE", WITH ITS CREW OF 52 STILL ALIVE, FOLLOWING A DIVE TO THE SEA BED NEAR TOULON TODAY (TUESDAY). THE DIVE, CARRIED OUT IN A DIVING SAUCER DEVELOPED BY COMMANDER JACQUES COUSTEAU, THE UNDERWATER EXPLORER, ESTABLISHED THAT A SUNKEN OBJECT LOCATED SOME 820 FEET (250 METRES) DOWN BY SONAR EQUIPMENT WAS NOT THE MINERVE.

A MASSIVE AIR AND SEA RESCUE FORCE HAS BEEN COMBING A LARGE AREA OF THE WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN SINCE THE MINERVE WAS REPORTED MISSING OF TOULEON ON SATURDAY. THE SUBMARINE HAD ENOUGH OXYGEN FOR 100 HOURS, BUT THIS WOULD NOW BE NEARLY EXHAUSTED. AFTER TODAY'S DIVE, COMMANDER COUSTEAU REPORTED THAT HE COULD FIND NO TRACE OF THE MINERVE.
