Background: VISNEWS cameras filmed the arrival at the Paris check point Jan 18 of three British entrants in this years Monte Carlo Rally. Among the more important of the arrivals was British hops for the 'Coupe des Dames'- an Austin car (No 208) driven by Pat Moss, sister of racing ace Stirling, and Miss Ann Wisdom, the couple who gained the Womens World Rally Championship for 1958.
Reports from the gruelling mountain route were of ice, snow, frost and heavy winds. Typical Monte weather. Cars starting from Paris left the check point at 2 a.m....in driving snow.. They will continue without respite to Bourges and then, over the Auvergne mountains by way of Le Puy to Chambery, in the Savoy Alps. The follows a mountain route of over 300 mile to Monaco.
Protests, which often figure in the results of the Rally, started this year before the event began. The British Motor Corporation has asked the Royal Automobile Club to take up with the International Sporting Commission (A body responsible for governing the Rally) a question of unfair treatment towards five of the many 'works entered' entered by the Corporation Some drivers of BMC cars were surprised to find their touring cars raised to Category II Special Series along with Grand Touring Cars. M. Taffe, Secretary of the Automobile Club of Monaco (Another governing body) has objected to machining of cylinder heads to raise compression ratio in the standard engines of some BMC cars.
BMC say M. Taffe has misinterpreted Article 263 Appendix J, which does not prohibit machining the cylinder heads, merely their replacement by other parts.
