  • Description

TENSION HAS BEEN RISING IN CYPRUS FOLLOWING MORE EXPLOSION TODAY (THURSDAY) IN NICOSIA. IN THE INCIDENT, THE MINARET OF A TURKISH MOSQUE WAS WRECKED ENDING COMPLETELY WHAT HAD BEEN A PARTIAL RELAXATION IN THE TENSE ATMOSPHERE SINCE BRITISH TROOPS HAD BEEN ENGAGED IN PATROLLING THE CITY.

THE PATROLS STARTED AFTER A VIOLENCE BROKE OUT IN DECEMBER LAST YEAR, AND WHEN PEACE WAS RESTORED - AFTER MANY PEOPLE HAD BEEN KILLED - TURKISH-CYPRIOT FAMILIES MOVED FROM VILLAGES PREDOMINANTLY GREEK TO NEW HOMES AMONG THEIR OWN NATIONALS.

BUT ALTHOUGH LIFE RESUMED IN THE CAPITAL, NICOSIA, THERE HAVE BEEN ISOLATED INCIDENTS DESPITE THE VIGILANCE OF THE BRITISH PATROLS.

AMONG THE VISITORS TO THE ISLAND IS THE UNITED NATIONS LEADER GENERAL GYANI, OF INDIA, WHO VISITED THE GENERAL HOSPITAL TO TALK WITH THREE VICTIMS OF AN ATTACK WHICH TOOK PLACE IN A HOTEL WHICH LIES IN THE "NEUTRAL ZONE". GENERAL GYANI WAS WELCOMED AT THE HOSPITAL BY THE DIRECTOR, MR. VASSILOPOULOS.

IN THE STREETS, PATROLS ARE BEING CARRIED OUT ON FOOT AND IN VEHICLES. OTHER PRECAUTIONS ARE ALSO BEING TAKEN. ROLLS OF BARBED WIRE HAVE BEEN DISTRIBUTED IN STREETS AND FORTIFICATIONS ARE BEING PREPARED IN THE SUBURBS.

REPORTS THAT TROOPS OF THE TURKISH NATIONAL ARMY CONTINGENT WERE TAKING UP POSITIONS IN THE HILLS NORTH OF NICOSIA HAVE BEEN DENIED BY A BRITISH MILITARY SPOKESMAN, BUT PRESIDENT MAKARIOS SAID TONIGHT: "ANY ATTEMPT BY THE TURKS TO CREATE A FAIT ACCOMPLI WILL BE FACED BY ALL MEANS AT OUR DISPOSAL".

DR. FADIL UTCHUK, THE TURKISH-CYPRIOT VICE PRESIDENT HAS STRONGLY PROTESTED AGAINST THE EXPLOSIONS WHICH FOLLOWED PRESIDENT MAKARIOS'S STATEMENT. DR. UTCHUK ADDED THAT THE SITUATION IN THE TURKISH SECTOR WAS "VERY TENSE".

MR. DUNCAN SANDYS, THE COMMONWEALTH SECRETARY, HAS MADE ARRANGEMENTS TO MEET IN LONDON TOMORROW, FOR SEPARATE TALKS, THE GREEK AND TURKISH FOREIGN MINISTERS. HE IS ALSO DUE TO HAVE DISCUSSIONS TOMORROW WITH THE TURKISH-CYPRIOTS.
