  • Description

On July 2, 1965 the President of the Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia, Josip Beroz Tito, visited Novi Sad, at present the most badly threatened town on the banks of the river Danube. On that occasion he visited also some neighbouring places, flooded by the waters of the Danube.

At present, Novi Sad is one and a half metres bellow the water level on the surrounding flooded area.

According to the statement of the head of the rescuers, about half million people participated in the rescue operations so far. Each day the rescuers brigades number 30.000 civil people and about 15.000 army people.

This is the most fertile agrarian area in Yugoslavia. The region of Voyvodina is being defended by means of ramparts for 80 days now. This area comprises 530.00 hectares of arable, seeded land, with 49 inhabited settlements and a population of half million people.About 27.000 hectares have been flooded so far, while another 27.,000 hectares, behind the ramparts have also been flooded by underground waters.

About 25.000 inhabitants were evacuated and settled under tents, in school or other buildings. After having toured the neighbouring parts of Novi Sad, Futog, Veternig and Becej, the President of the Republic, Tito, said that Novi Sad must be defended from the Danube.

According to experts' estimations, the danger from further flooding still exists, although a lower water level of the Danube is expected in the coming ten days or so.Work on ramparts is effectuated day and night.

Even incomplete information and data indicate that in this part of the country alone, the damage amounts to 80 milliard dinars.
