    SHEIKH MOHAMMED ABDULLAH, THE LION OF KASHMIR, LEFT COURT AT JAMMU IN THE NORTH INDIAN STATE TODAY, (WEDNESDAY), A FREE MAN AFTER BEING ACQUITTED AFTER A 19 MONTHS TRIAL ON CHARGES OF CONSPIRACY TO OVERTHROW THE KASHMIR GOVERNMENT.

    PROSECUTING COUNSEL SAID THAT THE CASE AGAINST THE 58 YEAR OLD FORMER KASHMIRI PREMIER AND 25 OTHERS ACCUSED WITH HIM, HAD BEEN WITHDRAWN FOR REASONS OF STATE -- ALTHOUGH 11 OF THEM WERE BEING TRIED IN THEIR ABSENCE.

    THE SHEIKH PLAYED A LEADING ROLE IN KASHMIR'S ACCESSION TO INDIA IN 1947. THE ACCESSION DECISION WAS TAKEN BY THE FORMER HINDU RULER, ALTHOUGH FOUR-FIFTHS OF THE KASHMIRIS ARE MOSLEM.

    WITH RELATIONS BETWEEN HINDUS AND MOSLEMS AT A LOW EBB, SHEIKH ABDULLAH BEGAN CRITICIZING ALLEGED DISCRIMINATIONS AGAINST MOSLEMS IN INDIA AND ONCE ADVOCATED INDEPENDENCE FOR THE STATE AFTER HE BECAME PRIME MINISTER. HE WAS ARRESTED IN AUGUST 1953, RELEASED FOR FOUR MONTHS DURING 1958, AND THEN REARRESTED.

    HIS TRIAL ON CHARGES OF CONSPIRACY BEGAN IN AUGUST 1962.
