REAGAN:"It is true that a number of Republican leaders, people in our party, office holders, felt, as I'm sure many others have felt, that a proper ticket would have included the former President of the United States, Gerald Ford as second place on the ticket. And it is true also that we have gone over this, and over this, and over this, and he and I have come to the conclusion, and he believes deeply that he can be of more value as the former President campaigning his heart out, as he has pledged to do. I then believed that because of all the talk and how something might keep going into the night, that it was time for me to advance the schedule a little bit. And I talked to a man well all know and a man who was a candidate, a man who has great experience in Government, and a man who told me that be can enthusiastically support a platform across the board. I have asked, and I am recommending to this convention, that tomorrow, when the session reconvenes, that George Bush be nominated Vice-President."
REAGAN:"Ambassador and Mrs George Bush."
BUSH: "Thank you Governor Reagan and (INDISTINCT). But my comments are simply that last night, I believe it was ten thirty or eleven thirty, it's irrelevant, Governor Reagan called me and told me of his decision. I accepted enthusiastically, and I look forward to assisting him in every way possible to become the next President of the United States and I know I speak for Barbara, when I say we are delighted. I will await the action of the convention of course, but I'm very pleased to have been selected to be Governor Reagan's choice."

Background: At the Republican Party's National convention in the United States, Governor Ronald Reagan has announced his vice-presidential running mate for the November Presidential elections. His surprise choice was a moderate, Mr. George Bush. Mr. Bush was an unpopular selection with the right-wing of the party who preferred a combination of ex-President Gerald Ford and Mr. Reagan.
SYNOPSIS: At the Detroit venue of the Republican convention, party supporters were jubilantly celebrating the nomination of Governor Reagan, as if he had already won the Presidency itself.
The celebration seemed like a victory party, as some four thousand delegates, clapped, cheered, beat dorms and blew horns to add to the general hysteria. But the big question was the vice-President Gerald Ford, but his terms were too high.
The announcement was as big a surprise to Mr. Bush as everyone else. He'd gone to bed believing a deal had been struck with Mr. Ford.
