  • Description

DRIVERS DESCRIBED THE FIRST STAGE OF THE MONTE CARLO RALLY AS "BORING" WHEN THEY ARRIVED IN THE TINY MEDITERRANEAN PRINCIPALITY TODAY (MONDAY) AFTER THE MARATHON 1,900-MILE (3,000 KILOMETRE) DRIVE FROM EIGHT STARTING POINTS IN EUROPE. CONDITIONS HAD BEEN SO EASY THAT 176 OF THE 195 STARTERS CROSSED THE LINE.

EXCELLENT WEATHER CONDITIONS IN EUROPE HAD MADE THIS YEAR'S FIRST STAGE ONE OF THE DULLEST FOR COMPETITORS. OVER 100 OF THE FINISHERS AT MONTE CARLO TODAY WERE BELIEVED TO BE WITHOUT PENALTIES.

THERE WILL BE TOUGHER DRIVING IN THE MORNING FOR THOSE TAKING PART IN THE FIRST MOUNTAIN TEST, WHICH HAS BEEN MADE HARDER FOR COMPETITORS IN THE MAIN GROUP BY A RESTRICTION EIGHT TYRES. TONIGHT PORSCHE WERE BEING TIPPED TO WIN THEIR FIRST MONTE CARLO RALLY FOR GERMANY ON THE GROUNDS THAT THEIR CHIEF RIVALS, THE BRITISH MINI-COOPERS, WOULD BE HEAVILY HANDICAPPED BY VIRTUE OF THEIR SMALL WHEELS.

ONLY A FEW HUNDRED SPECTATORS TURNED OUT TODAY TO SEE THE RALLY CREWS ARRIVE IN WARM SUNSHINE.

TWO WELL-KNOWN RALLY DRIVERS, RENE TRAUMANN (FRANCE) IN A LANCIA, AND HARRY KAELLSTROEM (SWEDEN) IN A RENAULT, FAILED TO REACH MONACO. VIRTUALLY ALL THE FAVOURITES WERE IN THE HUGE GROUP WITHOUT LOSS OF MARKS. THESE INCLUDED PAULI TOIVONEN (FINLAND), LAST YEAR'S WINNER, IN A LANCIA - THE BRITISH MINI-COOPER TEAM OF TIMO MAKINEN AND RAUNO AALTONEN OF FINLAND, AND PADDY HOPKIRK OF IRELAND - AND THE GERMAN PORSCHES.

MOST OF THE WOMEN'S TEAMS SURVIVED - SEVERAL OF THEM UNPENALISED. THEY INCLUDED ROSEMARY SMITH, OF IRELAND, AND VALERIE DOMLEO-MORLEY, OF BRITAIN, IN A SUNBEAM IMP, AND THE FRENCH CREW OF LUCETTE POINTET AND JACQUELINE POUGERAY IN A CITROEN DS 21.

THE CONDITIONS REDUCED THE ACCIDENT QUOTA, AND NO-ONE WAS BADLY HURT, THOUGH SEVERAL DRIVERS HAD NARROW ESCAPES INCLUDING MARIE-CLAUDE BEAUMONT, OF GRENOBLE, AND GINETTE REROLLANT, OF GENEVA, WHOSE LITTLE N.S.U. WAS WRECKED IN A HEAD-ON CRASH.
