  • Description

Mr Edvar Kardelj, Vice-President of the Federal Executive Council of Yugoslavia, arrive this morning in Athens for a three-day official visit to Greece.

He was greeted at the Hellikon (Athens) airport by Greek Premier Constantine Karamanlis, Foreign Minister Averof, and many other Government officials. The Yugoslavia Ambassador to Greece, Mr. Pavicevic was also present.

Political talks between Mr Kardelj and the Greek Government were starting this evening.

Although it is said that Mr Kardelj's visit to Athens is without any special significance, being a return visit to that made by the Greek Premier to Belgrade, diplomatic circles in Athens attach special importance to these Greco-Yugoslav talks. It is understood that the Middle East troubled state of affairs will rank high in the agenda.

It is also believed that the Yugoslav Vice-President will attempt to persuade the Greek Government to reconsider Rumanian Premier Staika's proposal to Greece for a six-state Balkan conference.

Edvar Kardelj will also be honoured by King Paul at the Royal Palace, where he is due to take luncheon next Thursday.
