    MR. GEORGE BALL, THE U.S. UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE, FLEW INTO CYPRUS TODAY (WEDNESDAY) FOLLOWING VISITS TO LONDON, ATHENS, AND ANKARA, IN HIS BID TO PROMOTE A SOLUTION TO THE PEACE-KEEPING PROBLEM IN CYPRUS.

    HE WAS MET AT THE AIRPORT BY THE U.S. AMBASSADOR, MR. FRASER WILKINS.

    AFTER 90 MINUTE BRIEFING AT THE AMERICAN EMBASSY, MR. BALL MET WITH ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS. HE HAD A SEPARATE MEETING WITH DR. KUTCHUK, THE CYPRUS VICE-PRESIDENT, AND DESCRIBED THEM AS USEFUL CONVERSATIONS.

    LATER HE MET ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS FOR A SECOND TIME-THEIR FIRST MEETING HAD LASTED FOR AN HOUR AND 40 MINUTES. AFTERWARDS ARCHBISHOPS MAKARIOS SAID HE HAD "NO COMMENT AS YET."
    (IT IS BELIEVED THAT ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS IS BEING ASKED TO ACCEPT A COMPROMISE PEACE PLAN RELATED TO THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL. THE ARCHBISHOP HAS STATED THAT HE WOULD OPPOSE ANY FORCE THAT WAS NOT UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL, WHICH WAS NOT ENVISAGED IN THE ORIGINAL PLAN. THIS WAS FOR A 10,000 STRONG FORCE FROM NATO NATIONS UNDER THE CONTROL OF A COMMITTEE OF PARTICIPATING NATIONS.)
    WHILE TODAY'S MEETING WERE IN PROGRESS THERE WAS SPORADIC FIGHTING IN LIMASSOL'S. THE SHOOTING WAS IN THE AREA OF LIMASSOL'S ANCIENT BERENGARIA CASTLE, OVERLOOKING THE PORT. A CEASEFIRE WAS AGREED IN THE LATE AFTERNOON. A BRITISH MILITARY SPOKESMAN SAID THAT TWO TURKISH-CYPRIOTS AND ONE GREEK-CYPRIOT WERE KILLED, BUT LATER \CYPRUS RADIO SAID THAT AN ESTIMATED 20 TURKISH-CYPRIOTS WERE KILLED AND ONE GREEK-CYPRIOT.
