  • Description

RED CROSS REPRESENTATIVES IN THE MIDDLE EAST YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) SUPERVISED THE RETURN OF THE BODIES OF SYRIAN SOLDIERS KILLED IN A CLASH WITH ISRAELI TROOPS. THE MEN WERE KILLED WHEN THEY BATTLED WITH ISRAELI FORCES IN THE GOLAN HEIGHTS LAST MONDAY (MARCH 23).

THERE WERE CONFLICTING REPORTS ABOUT THE BATTLE. ISRAEL CLAIMED IT HAD KILLED EIGHT SYRIAN SOLDIERS BUT SUFFERED NO CASUALTIES....SYRIA SAID IT LOST SIX MEN KILLED AND ANOTHER MISSING WHILE KILLING FIVE ISRAELIS.

THERE WERE TWO CLASHES BETWEEN THE FORCES. IN THE FIRST, SOUTH OF BAKATA, AT LEAST ONE SYRIAN WAS KILLED. THE SECOND BATTLE OCCURRED A QUARTER OF AN HOUR LATER NEAR BIRKET RAM.

IT WAS ONLY THE SECOND TIME SYRIA HAD REPORTED A RAID BY HE TROOPS ACROSS THE CEASEFIRE LINE SINCE THE END OF THE SIX SAY WAR IN 1967. THE SYRIANS HAVE ENGAGED THE ISRAELIS IN A SERIES OF AIR, TANK AND ARTILLERY BATTLES IN THE PAST THREE MONTHS WHICH HAS FORCED THE ISRAELIS TO DIVERT MORE ATTENTION TO THE NORTHERN FRONT.

THE RED CROSS ORGANISED THE RETURN OF THE SLAIN SYRIAN SOLDERS. SEVEN COFFINS WERE TAKEN BY AMBULANCE TO AHMEDIYEH JUNCTION, ABOUT 37 MILES (60 KMS) FROM DAMASCUS. THEY WERE TRANSFERRED TO CARD FOR THE TRIP TO THE SYRIAN CAPITAL.
