    THE TOKYO-NAGOYA EXPRESSWAY -- KNOWN AS THE TOMEI EXPRESSWAY -- OPENED YESTERDAY (MONDAY). OPERATING IN CO-OPERATION WITH THE EXISTING NAGOYA-KOBE EXPRESSWAY -- MEISHIN -- THE NEW PROJECT WILL PROVIDE ADDED IMPETUS TO THE FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF JAPANESE TOURISM.

    THE NEW EXPRESSWAY IS SURFACED WITH ASPHALT AND VARIES FROM SIX TO FOUR LANES OF TRAFFIC. IT COVERS A TOTAL DISTANCE OF ABOUT 331 MILES (ABOUT 535 KMS) AND HAS SIX MAJOR TUNNELS.

    IT HAS BEEN ESTIMATED THAT THE AVERAGE DAILY TRAFFIC VOLUME ON THE EXPRESSWAY FOR 1969 WILL BE 15,400 VEHICLES BUT THIS IS EXPECTED TO SWELL TO 36,900 BY 1977.

    THE EXPRESSWAY CONSISTS MAINLY OF VARIOUS CURVED WAYS WITH ONLY A TOTAL OF FIVE PER CENT OF THE LENGTH CONSTITUTING STRAIGHTWAYS. THE PRIMARY AIM OF THIS DESIGN IS TO PREVENT DRIVERS FROM CLOSING CONCENTRATION THROUGH DRIVING IN STRAIGHT LINES.
