  • Description

COMMANDER WALTER SCHIRRA YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) MADE A SIX-ORBIT TRIP AROUND THE EARTH - AND CAME DOWN ON TARGET IN THE PACIFIC. HE WAS LIFTED FROM THE SEA INSIDE HIS CAPSULE ON TO THE DECK OF THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER "KEARSARGE".

THE 39-YEAR-OLD ASTRONAUT WAS LAUNCHED INTO SPACE FROM CAPE CANAVERAL. FIVE MINUTES LATER, HIS CAPSULE WAS IN ORBIT. SCHIRRA REPORTED THAT THE LAUNCH AND FLIGHT WERE PROCEEDING BEAUTIFULLY. HOWEVER, HE DID HAVE DIFFICULTY AT FIRST WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES IN HIS SPACE SUIT AND CAPSULE.

LATER, HE REPORTED THAT ALL WAS WELL - "GO" IN SPACEMAN'S LANGUAGE. HE SAID HIS SPACECRAFT WAS FLYING WELL AND THAT THE SUIT AND CABIN TEMPERATURES WERE COOLING.

SCHIRRA ORBITED THE EARTH AT 17,500 MILES AN HOUR. HE CAME DOWN IN THE RECOVERY AREA 9 HOURS AND 13 MINUTES AFTER BLAST-OFF. HE TRAVELLED A TOTAL OF 160,000 MILES. IT WAS AMERICA'S LONGEST SPACE FLIGHT. PREVIOUS AMERICAN ASTRONAUTS, JOHN GLENN AND SCOTT CARPENTER, EACH MADE ONLY THREE ORBITS.
