  • Description

The Congo Kinshasa town of Bukavu is slowly recovering from the damage wrought by mercenaries who occupied it during the recent Congolese uprising. The town has now been re-occupied by Congolese Government troops, and first film from the area shows inspection of the damage by Government officials.

Refugees from the area, who have been flying into Kinshasa during the last few days, described how the mercenaries - said to be smarting under the humiliation of losing the town - got completely out of hand and attacked and looted houses, hotels, and even the Belgian and American Consulates. The refugees have arrived in Kinshasa from such previously-occupied towns as Kisangani and Bukavu aboard Red Cross chartered planes.

As for the mercenaries, many are still at large. More than a thousand who fled from Kisangani with hostages five days ago are said to have reached an almost impenetrable jungle retreat. From there it is thought they may escape by plane to the nearest non-hostile territory -- Angola, about 600 miles (1,000 kms) away.
