  • Description

Cuban Catholics were called to the alert against Communism in a pastoral letter circulated throughout the island and read by the author, Archbishop of Santiago de Cuba, in Church of Charity, May 22, Havana, Cuba.

Regarded as the first such open statement by a high church official against Communists influences in the present Cuban government, the Archbishop's letter alleges that Communism "is everywhere, although there are among us some gullible, innocent or extremely prudent persons who persist in denying it and who are angry that not all think as they do."
Archbishop Enrique Perez Serantes wrote that "the enemy is in reality within, speaking loudly as though on his own property."
This attack on Communism comes shortly after the seizure of two Cub Cuban anti-Communist newspaper - Diario de la Marina and Prensa Libre. The International Press Institute, May 22, in conference in Geneva, issued a statement deploring "the progressive elimination of press freedom in Cuba."
