  • Description

Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir is expected to argue in the United States that Egypt should not be allowed to turn a military defeat in the Middle East into political victory.

Mrs. Meir arrived in Washington on Wednesday (October 31( for Middle East peace talks with President Nixon and U. S. Secretary of State, Dr Henry Kissinger.

President Nixon and Dr. Kissinger had friendly talks with Egyptian Envoy Ismail Fahmy at the White House on Wednesday. But it has not been revealed whether the friendship meant progress had been made towards a permanent peace settlement between Israel and the Arabs.

Mrs. Meir will approach the talks aware that in Israel many people feel the United States and Russia had no right to sponsor a ceasefire last week just as Israeli forces had occupied Egyptian territory west of the Suez Canal for the first time. however most Israelis have been thankful for American military and political support.

On her arrival Mrs. Meir was asked if she thought the United States had been putting Israel under undue pressure over the ceasefire and negotiating with the Arabs.

Her reply is on film. A transcript follows:
