  • Description

The Saudi Arabian Oil Minster Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani and Algeria's Industry Minister Belaid Abdessalem conferred in Paris for an-hour-and-a-half on Monday night (November 26) with the French Foreign Minster Michel Jobert about the Arab oil boycott.

Afterwards, the two ministers said they expected Wet European countries to come out more strongly in favour of the Arab cause, in order to secure an easing of the oil embargo.

Sheikh Yamani and Mr. Abdessalem saw M. Jobert at the start of a West European tour to explain the Arab oil squeeze and general Arab policy in the confrontation with Israel.

Asked by reporters what the West European countries could do to ease the embargo, Sheikh Yamani said: "Of course, we expect something more than just another declaration."
Diplomats interpreted this as meaning the Arab oil producers wanted action from the West European countries in order to pressure Israel into withdrawing from occupied territory.

Mr. Abdessalem described the meeting with M. Jobert as "useful and constructive" and added: "It allowed a better appreciation of our point of view."
The two ministers, who were entrusted with their current mission by the Arab oil ministers at their Kuwait meeting in early November, were expected to see President Pompidou and other members of the French government.

After Paris, the two ministers will visit London, Brussels, Bonn and Rome, spending about three days in each capital. They will also visit Washington and New York and stop in Tokyo on the way back to the Middle East to report to their fellow Arab oil ministers.

Answering journalists' questions on television on Monday night, Sheikh Yamani said oil-importing nations would have their supplies restored if Israel withdrew from occupied areas.

He said if the Israeli withdrawal was progressive, a supply calendar would be drawn up to lift the embargo.
