  • Description

Britain's Jackie Stewart, driving a Tyrell-Ford, yesterday (Sunday) won the Spanish Grand Prix for formula-1 cars, the second leg of the 1971 World Championship series.

Jackie Ickx, of Belgium, was second in a Ferrari, and clocked the fastest individual lap, clipping 3.2 seconds off the record set in 1960 by the late Jochen Rindt of Austria.

Third was New Zealander Chris Amon, driving a Matra-Simca.

The race result puts 1969 world champion Jackie Stewart at the head of the Championship table with 15 points. Second is Mario Andretti of the United States with nine points, Ickx and Amon sharing third place with six points.

Andretti, winner of the South African Grand Prix, was involved in the only serious incident at the Montjuich circuit overlooking Barcelona: he had to abandon his Ferrari when it caught fire. He was unhurt.

SYNOPSIS: On the twisting Montjuich circuit in the hills above Barcelona, 22 of the world's top drivers fought it out on Sunday in the Spanish formula-one Grand Prix.

Britain's Jackie Stewart, driving the dark-blue Tyrell-Ford - No.11 - began a duel with Jackie Ickx in a Ferrari, finally overtaking the Belgian driver in the seventh lap.

Stewart and Ickx treated the 50,000 crowd to a demonstration of superb cornering on the testing circuit. The event was the second world championship qualifying race for 1971. Stewart held his lead and was at times ten seconds ahead of his rival, but it was Ickx who clocked up the fastest lap, a new record for the circuit.

Stewart was first past the flag, followed by Ickx and New Zealander Chris Amon in a Matra-Simca.

Stewart's victory put him top of the championship table.
