  • Description

Soviet tennis ace Alex Metreveli's victory in straight sets over Australian Davis Cup prospect Alvin Gardner in the second round of the Victorian open tennis championship this week puts him high in the running for his fourth Australian state championship this year. His Russian teammate, Olga Morozova, was eliminated from the women's championship.

Metreveli, who has won the South Australian, Western Australian and Tasmanian titles, ranks high among the favourites for the most coveted tennis championship of all - Wimbledon. This would give the Soviet Union their first Wimbledon title.
