  • Description

Forces of the Khmer Republic (Cambodia) have sustained heavy losses in their attempts to push back the North Vietnamese from areas south-east of the capital, Phnom Penh.

Heaviest fighting had been on Route 5, the Highway running from Saigon to Phnom Penh. Here the Cambodians have been heavily shelled by the enemy firing from behind the shelter of the recently captured Cheukach Hills. Cambodian losses in this action alone have been estimated at nearly 1000 over a two-week period.

On Monday (25 September) president Lon Nol of the Khmer Republic visited troop positions around Route 5 to encourage his men. His government has called on world opinion to help stop what it described as "deliberate crimes of genocide" committed by North Vietnamese forces. This follows the discovery of 36 skulls and other bones, claimed to be remains of some 300 Cambodian adults and children.

SYNOPSIS: Government troops in the Khmer Republic have paid heavily for their attempts to shift strong North Vietnamese positions away from areas south-east of Phnom Penh. In two weeks of fighting they have lost nearly a thousand men.

The North Vietnamese have the advantage of the fortress-like Cheukach Hills, which they captured recently from Phnom Penh forces. From here they have been launching massive artillery barrages against government positions down below around Route Five, the main highway between Saigon and Phnom Penh.

Meanwhile, the government of the Khmer Republic has appealed for world opinion to help stop what it calls 'deliberate crimes of genocide' following the discovery of 36 skulls and other bones near Route Five. These are said to be remains of some of three hundred adults and children killed by the North Vietnamese.

President Lon Nol of the Khmer Republic visited detachments of his troops around Route Five on Monday. He urged them to intensify their efforts to dislodge the North Vietnamese from the hills above them, and push them away from the vital Saigon - Phnom Penh highway.
