    Background: YOKOSUKA/TOKYO, JAPAN

The United States destroyer "USS Oldendorf" was welcomed at a Japanese ceremony on August 15, the same day that Japanese Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone paid tribute to his country's war dead. The Oldendorf, a destroyer capable of carrying nuclear weapons, was greeted at a ceremony at the Japanese port of Yokosuka. It is not known if the US warship was carrying a nuclear weapons during the visit. The Japanese Communist Party had tried to organise opposition to the arrival of the US ship; the welcoming ceremony, however off without incident. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nakasone drank sacred sake during a visit to the controversial shrine to Japan's 3.1 million war dead. The 114-year-old Yasukuni shrine is sometimes viewed as a symbol of pre-war Japanese militarism. Nakasone's visit was one of the ceremonies marking the 39th anniversary of Japan's defeated in the Second World War.
