  • Description

THE FORMER GREEK PRIME MINISTER, MR. PAPANDREOU IS KEEPING UP HIS ATTACKS ON MINISTERS OF HIS OWN PARTY WHO SERVED UNDER HIM AND WHO ARE NOW SERVING IN THE NEW GOVERNMENT. TODAY (THURSDAY) AT A PARTY RALLY AND MEETING IN ATHENS HE CALLED THEM AGAIN "TRAITORS". SEVEN OUT OF 21 MINISTERS IN THE NEW GOVERNMENT SERVED UNDER PAPANDREOU. THE OUSTED PRIME MINISTER AND HIS SUCCESSOR, MR. NOVAS, BELONG TO THE SAME PARTY, THE CENTRE UNION PARTY.

AS MR. PAPANDREOU ARRIVED BY CAR FOR THE MEETING AT PARTY HEADQUARTERS, A CROWD OF 5,000 OF HIS SUPPORTERS APPLAUDED. LATER, HE APPEARED ON A BALCONY AND WAS CHEERED AGAIN.

AFTER THE MEETING, MR. PAPANDREOU SAID HE AND HIS SUPPORTERS WOULD BOYCOTT WHAT HE CALLED THE PARODY OF PARLIAMENT TOMORROW DURING THE EMERGENCY DEBATE ON THE CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS. BUT HE SAID HE WOULD TAKE PART IN THE VOTE OF CONFIDENCE WHICH MR. NOVAS WAS ASKING. THIS HE SAID WOULD "ERASE FROM THE FACE OF THE EARTH THE TRAITORS AND PUPPETS OF THE PALACE GOVERNMENT."
ALL BUT TWO OF THE 143 CENTRE UNION DEPUTIES AT TODAY'S MEETING PLEDGED TO VOTE AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT. THE UNION HOLDS 170 OF THE 300 SEATS IN PARLIAMENT. THERE IS THEREFORE LITTLE CHANCE THAT MR. NOVAS CAN SURVIVE A VOTE AND KING CONSTANTINE WILL THEN HAVE TO LOOK FOR A NEW GOVERNMENT.
