Soccer ... and in their opening match of the World Cup tournament, the host country Argentina beat Hungary two-one. The Group One match was a dramatic one. After Argentina substitute Alonso had scored the winning goal with six minutes to go, two Hungarians, Nyilasi and Torocsik were sent off and will miss the next match. After this convincing result, Argentina have replaced Brazil as favourites to win the cup with most London bookmakers.
SYNOPSIS: Hungary opened the scoring in the game at the River Plate Stadium against Argentina, the locals playing in the striped shirts. The goal came after Filiol dived to save a shot from Zombori. The ball cannoned into Csapo's path and he scored.
Six minutes later, however, it was Argentina's turn. The home crowd roared its approval when Luque equalised after a kick. Kempes shot through the defensive wall, the goalkeeper Gujdar could only parry and Luque put it home.
Hungary were quick to come back with a hard-hitting attack, but a shot by Torocsik went sailing over the top of the net.
The second half opened with the two teams level pegging, and it was Hungary who came back first with another shot. A header from Najy. It missed and proved Hungary's last real chance of scoring.
The mood of the game quickly changed as Argentina launched a strong attack. The Hungarians pulled most of their best men into defence and they lost their composure as Passarella, coming from deep in midfield, set up a few chances for Kempes and Luque. But the winning goal came from substitute Alonso just six minutes from the end.
Alonso had given Argentina the winning goal, but their pressure on Hungary continued to the finish.
The game was marred after Alonso's goal when two Hungarian players, Torocsik and Nyilasi were sent off by the referee. Torocsik, who had frequently been fouled by Argentine players during the course of the match, was sent off for hacking down Gallego.
He was followed by Nyilisi a few minutes later. In their next round-one matches on June 6, Argentina will meet France, and Hungary will play Italy.
