  • Description

Czech painter Ladislav Guderna and Bartolomej Vreznicky, 72-year-old master of woodcraft, were recently engaged in preparing a 10 by 10 ft piece of intricate marquetry for the National Theatre at Bratislava.

Working from a small drawing indicating the position of the different strips and shapes of veneer to be in laid in a wooden surface, the two artists cut to size pieces of wood of varying shades of colour. Marquetry material comes from trees growing naturally in all parts of the world.

In many hours of exacting work, the many little parts are assembled in something like jigsaw puzzle fashion. Precision is essential and a great deal of concentration is required before the process of matching and positioning eventually culminates in the finished product -- an exquisite work of art.
