  • Description

The Indian Parliament has extended its Monsoon session by another three days to cope with pressing official business.

Much of the new legislation is concerned with the new economic plan introduced by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to meet India's difficult economic problems.

The New Delhi Parliament is also discussing changes in India's electoral laws. According to Reuters reports, on Monday (4 August), the Indian government tables legislation retrospectively dealing with the conditions which led to Mrs. Gandhi's conviction on charges of electoral malpractice by the Allahabad High Court last June.

Reuters reported on Tuesday (5 August) that the new provisions had been paused almost unanimously in the Lower House.

Support for Mrs. Gandhi's new economic policies and her declaration of a State of Emergency continues to manifest itself. On monday, the Prime Minister met a large group in New Delhi, representing various sectors of the Indian community expressing their solidarity with her actions.
