  • Description

President de Gaulle of France pays tribute in Rome at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier and visits the French Cemetery.

This is day 3 of his five-day state visit to participate in the 100th anniversary of French victories over the old Austrian Empire that led to the start of a united Italy.

Much of the visit is devoted to political talks. Both nations are members of the Common Market and Nato. After de Gaulle's tribute to the dead of both nations he conferred with Prime Minister Antonio Segni, Foreign Minister Pella.

An announcement followed the meeting: Italy, it said, requested an extraordinary meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers before the Geneva talks with the Soviet Union reopen next month.

Diplomatic observers said the announcement came with some suddenness and pointedly said it was unlikely Italy would have made the proposal without finding out that it would have French support.

In London, it was known the Government disfavoured any special meeting that might suggest a crisis among the Nato countries. Reports also indicated the U.S. and West Germany held the British view.
