SYNOPSIS: At Buckingham Palace on Christmas Eve a crowd of visitors to London watched the usual Changing on the Guard ceremony (PAUSE 5 SECS) For the first time the replacement Guard was mounted by a brigade of Gurkhas from Nepal.

The fighting man of the Seventh Duke of Edinburgh's Own Gurkha Rifles has travelled to Britain mainly to raise money to relieve hardship in their mountain villages of the Himalayas.

Nepalese soldiers first served in units of the British Indian Army in the early part of last century. They're named after the small town of Gurkhs which is the ancestral home of the ruling house in Nepal.

All soldiers of Nepalese descent are nowadays referred to as Gurkhas, but British Gurkhs regiments are chiefly recruited from the Grung, Magar, Tamang, Rai and Limbu tribes. (PAUSE 5 SECS) This Gurkha Regiment, which was recently serving in Hongkong, is now stationed in Surrey and will guard Buckingham Palace and other buildings in London until March.
