    An exhibition marking the start of production for the French-financed oil deposit off the Congolese coast as held in Brazzaville on Wednesday (5 January). The show - which presented graphic details of oil-drilling in general - was inaugurated by French Ambassador Marc Bonnefous.

    The deposits named - "Esmerald" - are situated south of Pointe Noire, Congo-Brazzaville's main Atlantic port. They are being worked by the French company Elf which hopes to exploit an estimated 100 million tons of crude oil discovered in 1969. Total investment amount to 13 million frances CFA (About 19 million sterling). State participation will give Congo-Brazzaville 20 per cent of the profits.
