Background: France's Secretary General for African and Malagasy Affairs, M. Jacques Foccart, arrived in Dahomey's capital, Cotonou, on Monday (29 May) to discuss President Pompidou's visit to African in November.
M. Foccart had discussions with members of Dahomey's three-man Presidential Council and it was announced during his visit that the French President would spend three days in the country, arriving on November the 24th.
President Pompidou is making his trip to Africa to visit countries which have become linked to France through special agreements during his term of office.
SYNOPSIS: Arriving in Dahomey lat week -- France's Secretary-General for African and Malagasy Affairs, M. Jacques Foccart.
He was greeted at Cotonou Airport by Dahomey's Foreign Affairs Minister, M. Ahouanmenou and by France's Ambassador to Dahomey, M. Louis Delamare.
M. Foccart is visiting Africa to prepare for a tour by France's President Pompidou in November. Before arriving in Dahomey, M. Foccart had visited Upper Volta and Togo.
Formal greetings were kept to a minimum, and M. Foccart and his hosts hurried off for their first round of talks.
During his Dahomey visit, M. Foccart met all three members of the country's decision-making body, the Presidential Council.
M. Foccart told President Hubert Maga that President Pompidou was anxious to visit countries in Africa with when France had forged special links during his term as President. The meetings were concerned with general questions -- and it will be the work of officials on both sides in the coming months to hammer out the fine details.
Another member of the Dahomey Presidential Council is President Source Migan Apithy: he also received M.Foccart.
During this visit it was officially announced that President Pompidou would visit Dahomey for three days beginning on November the 24th.
