Background: Italian weightlifter R. Vezzani took the gold medal in the 110 kilo class of the weightlifting competition on Sunday (10 October), at the Mediterranean Games being held in Izmir. M. Ibrahim of Egypt was placed second for the silver medal, and A. Chogri of Syria took the bronze.
SYNOPSIS: The Syrian A. Chogri took third place in the 110 kilo division of the weightlifting final on Sunday at the Mediterranean Games being held in Izmir, Turkey.
The contestant representing Spain, J. Gordillo, was eventually to take fourth place in the competition. Fifteen countries are taking part in the Games.
The silver medal for second place went to the Egyptian, M. Ibrahim. All of the weightlifters in Sunday's final gained valuable experience for the coming Olympic Games to be held in Munich next year.
It was a total lift of 507.5 kilos which gave the gold medal to R. Vezzini of Italy on Sunday. More than 1,500 athletes have been competing in the Games, which began on October the 6th. Individual performances were closely watched by sporting critics in Izmir, looking for suitable comparisons with other world athletes for the Olympic Games.
