China has sent a senior delegation to Australia for talks there. It's the most important Chinese team ever to arrive in the country, and follows the visit to China last year by Australian Prime Minister Mr. Malcolm Fraser.
SYNOPSIS: The delegation, which was welcomed by Mr Fraser on its visit to Canberra, the Australian capital, was led by Vice-Chairman of the National People's Congress, Mr.Ulanfu. He was accompanied by four senior officials.
A tapestry showing the Great Wall of China was brought as a gift, and Mr. Fraser later spoke about developing communications between the two nations.
Opposition leader and former premier, Gough Whitlam also spoke.
Relations between Australia and China have improved steadily over the past few years. The latest visit was to discuss bilateral relations, international issues, and trade.
Ulanfu told the guests at the banquet in his honour that China would never seek to impose its will on other nations in the region -- but he did warn that China saw the world as 'far from tranquil'. The source of this in-tranquillity, he said, was the increased rivalry between 'the two superpowers'.
