    A WEST GERMAN SILVERSMITH, KLAUS PECHSTEIN, YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) COMPLETED A MARATHON SWIMMING TOUR FROM SWITZERLAND TO HOOK OF HOLLAND. FOR MOST OF THE JOURNEY HE WAS SWIMMING IN THE RHINE.

    ALTOGETHER PECHSTEIN COVERED ABOUT 760 MILES (1,220 KILOMETRES) IN 29 DAYS AND WAS SWIMMING FOR TOTAL OF 130 HOURS - WITH INTERVALS BETWEEN STAGES.

    DURING YESTERDAY'S FINAL STAGE, PECHSTEIN, WHO IS 28, SWAM PAST THE BIG STEAMERS AND TANKERS IN THE NIEUWE WATERWAY.

    ESCORTED BY A MOTOR BOAT AND AN OUTBOARD MOTOR-POWERED DINGHY, THE YOUNG SWIMMER MADE STEADY PROGRESS UP THE WIDE CHANNEL. A CROWD HAD HATHERED TO GREET HIM AT THE PREDESTINED FINISHING POINT, AND TWO OTHER SWIMMERS MET HIM JUST BEFOREHAND WITH BOUQUETS OF FLOWERS.
