    AS ABIDJAN, CAPITAL OF THE IVORY COAST, CONTINUES TO GROW, SO DO THE CITY'S FACILITIES TO COPE WITH ABIDJAN'S INCREASING DEMANDS FOR MORE AND MORE TELEPHONE LINES, A NEW TELEPHONE EXCHANGE HAS BEEN INSTALLED -- HELPING TO MORE THAN DOUBLE THE NUMBER OF LINES IN USE SIX YEARS AGO.

    THE NEW EXCHANGE, AT KILOMETRE-QUARTER, WAS OFFICIALLY OPENED ON FRIDAY BY THE MINISTER OF POSTS AND TELEGRAPHS, M. SULEIMAN CISSOK WHO WAS ACCOMPANIED BY THE MAYOR OF ABIDJAN, M. KONAN KANGA. THEY WERE SHOWN AROUND BY THE CENTRE'S DIRECTOR.

    IN 1962, THERE WERE 4,000 LINES IN ABIDJAN. NOW, SIX YEARS AFTER, THERE ARE 9,000 LINES IN ABIDJAN AND A TOTAL OF 12,000 IN ALL OF THE IVORY COAST. PLANS ARE UNDERWAY TO COVER THE WHOLE OF THE IVORY COAST WITH A DIRECT-DIALLING SYSTEM BY 1971.

    THE NEW CENTRE COST 135,000,000 CFA (ABOUT 540,000 U.S. DOLLARS). SOME 2,000 OF ITS 3,000 LINES WILL GO INTO IMMEDIATE USE. HOWEVER, THE AVAILABLE EQUIPMENT THE STATION TO COPE WITH 10,000 LINES. THE STATION IS ONE OF THE MOST MODERN AVAILABLE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD.
