  • Description

Students from 37 countries are in Sakiet Sidi Yussef - the village on the Algerian-Tunisian frontier bombed 15 months ago by French planes - to help rebuild the school demolished in the raid.

A group of students were filmed July 30 arriving to take part in this demonstration of international student solidarity. They were welcomed at the site of the school by the Minister of National Education.

The rebuilding organised by the International Student Conference, representing 66 national Student Unions from 5 continents, is expected to take about six weeks. During this time the student-builders will live in improvised huts and tents.

The French Government maintain that the village, which is only about a hundred yards from the Algerian frontier, "continues to be a base for Algerian rebel bands". Fighting has been reported recently from a French army post a few miles to the northwest.

The French Government further state that in addition to being propaganda, the project is likely to cause trouble. The Tunisian Minister of Information described the scheme as "an affair exclusively for the Tunisian Government".
