Palestine Arab troops participated July 23 in a great military parade in Cairo before United Arab Republic President, Gamal Nasser. The occasion was the 8th anniversary of the Egyptian revolution. Accompanying President Nasser was Sudanese President Abboud, who arrived Cairo July 20 for a seven-day visit to the UAR.
It took two hours for the long parade of "Stalin" tanks, Russian-built armoured cars and field guns to parade before the UAR President, and about half a million people packed in the city's Nile Cornirche. Cairo radio announced: "Here is the vanguard of the Palestine Army, which will invade Israel and throw the Israelis in the sea - the holy march on Palestine has started."
There was great excitement from the crowds as a jet plane - partially built by the UAR and named 'Al Kahira' - flew above and then dived low over the Nile.
The appearance of a locally built armoured car was the first indication that heavy armament was being built by the United Arab Republic.
