  • Description

THE FIRST OF 200 ARAB RESIDENTS, ORDERED TO LEAVE THEIR HOMES IN THE AREA ROUND JERUSALEM'S WAILING WALL, WERE EVACUATED YESTERDAY (24 JUNE).

THE ISRAELI MILITARY COMMANDER OF THE AREA ISSUED THE ORDER YESTERDAY AFTER THREE EXPLOSIONS IN A NARROW LANE LEADING TO JEWRY'S MOST SACRED SHRINE ON FRIDAY NIGHT.

SIX PEOPLE, MOSTLY ARAB RESIDENTS BUT INCLUDING ONE SOLDIER, WERE INJURED IN THE INCIDENT.

NOW SEVENTEEN FAMILIES ARE TO BE EVACUATED 'TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF WORSHIPPERS AND VISITORS AT THE WALL'. THEY HAVE BEEN OFFERED ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION IN OTHER QUARTERS OF EAST JERUSALEM, AND THE ISRAELI AUTHORITIES PROMISED TO PAY A YEAR'S RENT IN ADVANCE FOR THEM AND PROVIDE TRANSPORT FOR THE MOVE.

WITH ONLY 48 HOURS NOTICE OF THE MOVE, THE FAMILIES PROTESTED, BUT AFTER BEING ASSURED THEY WOULD BE COMPENSATED THEY ALLOWED THEIR FURNITURE AND POSSESSIONS TO BE LOADED INTO MUNICIPAL TRUCKS.

ONLY FOUR FAMILIES LEFT YESTERDAY. IT WAS THOUGHT THAT SOME OF THOSE WHO REMAINED -- PARTICULAR SHOPKEEPERS IN HAGAI STREET, SCENE OF THE EXPLOSIONS, MIGHT TRY TO RESIST THE 7 P.M. (1700 GMT) DEADLINE TONIGHT. ONE OF THE BUILDING TO BE EVACUATED IS THE OLD MOSQUE COURT WHICH OVERLOOKS THE WALL AREA.

SOME OF THE BUILDING IN HAGAI STREET, INCLUDING A SCHOOL, ARE SCHEDULED FOR DEMOLITION. THE LAST ARAB HOUSE NEAR THE WAILING WALL WAS TORN DOWN EARLIER YESTERDAY. WITH A CLEAR AREA AROUND THE WALL, MORE VISITORS CAN BE ACCOMMODATED, AND SABOTEURS WILL BE EASIER TO LOCATE.
