  • Description

Floods in South Vietnam have left 200 dead and thousands homeless. While the civilian population have been affected the most, the military have also suffered considerable damage this week.

The floodwaters swamped the South Korean marine base camp at Hoi An, in Quang Nam Province, in the north-east of South Vietnam. The muddy waters swirled through the camp and flooded bunkers.

There were also military casualties. An American helicopter crashed into the camp, killing the seven people aboard, after it was in collision with a South Korean aircraft.

The flooding - the most disastrous in six years - followed two typhoons which battered six provinces in the north of South Vietnam.

As the South Koreans dried out, the Vietcong and the South Vietnamese accused each other of exploiting the floods for military gains.

In an angry exchange at the Paris peace talks, the Vietcong alleged Saigon stepped up military sweeps and put flood victims into concentration camps. Denying the charges, the Saigon spokesman alleged that the Vietcong had created obstacles to relief operations and fired on helicopters on mercy flights.
