  • Description

Pakistan's Prime Minister, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, has declared that he will call a national referendum to determine whether he personally should continue in office. He made the announcement during an emotional 55-minute address to Parliament on Friday (13 May), in a move which he hopes will end Pakistan's two months of political turmoil which was started by opposition claims that Mr Bhutto faked the March general election results which gave his government an overwhelming victory.

SYNOPSIS: Earlier, Mr Bhutto called an impromptu news conference to disclose his latest discussions with leaders of the Pakistan National alliance -- the PNA -- who were calling for the resignation of himself and his government.

He said that a quick settlement of Pakistan's two months of political turmoil was not likely. Mr Bhutto confirmed that he had met PNA chief Maulana Mufti Mahmud, but declined to go into details of the discussions. Mr Bhutto also denied reports that three army brigadiers in the Punjab provincial capital of Lahore have resigned because they are unhappy about the army being used to control political agitation in the city.
