    Background: People living in the New Norway area of Alberta, Canada, flag on Wednesday (October 3rd) as a blanket of deadly gas enveloped the district. The gas highly poisonous Hydrogen Sulphide - leaked for a ruptured natural gas well.

    Police sealed of an area of 120 sq. miles (310 sq. kilometers) and evacuated about 500 people. Another 5,000 people ran from their homes in a waist-high blue fog, as the gas swept along the streets. The gas can be fatal to human beings, animals and vegetation, if the concentration is high enough. Nobody died, but several people were admitted to hospital suffering from sickness and chest pains.

    Later on Wednesday, the breezes stiffened and dispersed the cloud of gas. Most people were allowed to return to their homes, and workman began repairing the leaking well. The cause of the leak was not known. It happened while the well was being serviced to boost production.
